It is now easier than ever before for grocers to share the details of their products thanks to a new guideline issued by GS1 US.
The “GS1 US Guideline for Sharing Product Attributes via GDSN in Retail Grocery” was created with facilitating transparency in mind by a group of manufacturers, retailers, distributors and solution providers. It builds on the GDSN Retail Grocery Attribute Interactive Spreadsheet Tool to offer further guidance in order to help boost consistency and ease of use. It explains GDSN terminology in detail and highlights some real-word examples of it in action.
A few of the topics addressed by the guideline are hierarchies, attribute pairing, code lists, element naming and measurement units. There is a section devoted to pallets and logistics units, and the document also takes a look at metric and imperial measurements.
There is a comprehensive overview of the flow of data synchronization information, with a look at various retail grocery product information flows such as re-distributors of national brands and private labels, co-ops and buying groups, 2-party and 3-party scenarios, brokers, and third-party service providers. In addition, the guideline examines the downstream changeability of data attributes.
GS1 US’s Vice President of Retail Grocery and Foodservice, Angela Fernandez, pointed out that industry leaders depend on GDSN for the exchange of vital information such as consumer-facing attributes and trading partner details, and she said that the guideline was aimed at creating seamless ecommerce experiences that increase consumer satisfaction.
GS1 US is a not-for-profit organization that is devoted to information standards, and it is responsible for the world’s most widely-used supply chain standards, the GS1 standards. They are also in charge of the administration of Universal Product Code (UPC) barcodes. GS1 is headquartered in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and is used by millions of businesses for product information and barcodes.
