How Companies Like UPS Move Closer to Sustainability

As more and more customers are demanding sustainable services and products, many businesses are trying to make sustainable operational improvements. This can require a significant investment of time and money, and it also requires several different groups to collaborate in order to get the job done. Here is a look at some of the ways that UPS has made improvements in this regard.

A decade ago, they set up their Rolling Laboratory to try to solve some of the logistics challenges they faced across the range of environments, locations and delivery conditions they deal with on a daily basis.

They found that a single type of vehicle could not possibly serve all of their varying needs across the 220 countries and territories they serve. They found that electric vehicles are best for urban environments that require frequent stops as charging is easier in these locations, while using LNG, CNG, and RNG fuels works best for vehicles that cover longer distances.

Achieving Sustainability Requires Ongoing Effort

In 2012, the firm set a goal of driving a billion clean miles using alternative fuel vehicles by the close of 2017. In August, they hit their goal more than a year ahead of schedule. Even though their Rolling Laboratory has clocked some impressive results – helping them avoid using 49 million gallons of diesel and conventional gas and slashing their carbon dioxide emissions by 150,000 metric tons, for example – they are not content to stop there. Sustainability is an ongoing effort that requires constantly reimagining the way that things are done.

In order to achieve sustainability, it is necessary to analyze, hypothesize and test various ideas until success is noted, and then find new areas to apply those successes. It requires a clear commitment and disciplined look at the situation. Potential obstacles must be anticipated, and the approach must be adapted as conditions change.
